Sports cards used to be for children. They would buy packs for the gum, tape the cards to their walls and throw them in shoeboxes when they were done with them. Not too many people ever thought they would be valuable one day and probably wish they would have held on to their cards.

In the early 80s, card collecting became a very profitable hobby. Collectors were willing to pay big bucks for vintage cards and some dishonest individuals decided to capitalize on the demand for these cards. They started producing fake cards and selling them as the real thing. Today, that practice is still being used and with new technology available it can be real hard to identify the fakes from the real deal.

To protect against purchasing fake cards, look for the following red flags. First, the card stock is very important. Vintage cards have a particular feel and smell to them. This is due to the type of paper used to manufacture the cards. If the paper is not consistent with other cards from the era it is probably fake. This goes for newer cards as well. If the paper is too thin or not glossy enough on newer cards, it is probably fake.

You can also exam the printing patterns on a card to identify whether or not it is fake. Early counterfeit cards were produced with lower quality printers when compared to those in card factories. This caused inconsistencies in the ink and if examined with a magnifying glass the differences between real and fake are very noticeable.

When you are searching for certain baseball cards, you might come across a few that have autographs and though this might catch your eye at first, how sure are you that the signature is legit? This is often the problem with things that are signed because anyone can emulate a signature and it is very difficult to figure out if the signature is real. One of the best ways to tell if it is fake is of course if you have seen the real signature and they look completely different. The problem is that there are people who are able to copy signatures and this is where the problems arise. The best way to really guarantee a person has signed the memorabilia is if it is on camera and an actual video shows the baseball player signing the card. Often times there are certificates granted to those who have legit autographs but how sure are people that those certificates are legit as well. Having a video or picture with the person signing the card is a great way to prove that the item was indeed signed by the player and there were no fraudulent acts going on during the process.

For those who collect baseball cards, getting the best cards, your favorite players, and the cards that are worth the most value, are generally what the collector is looking to do when purchasing new cards. So, if you are at a trade and collector show, where cards are being sold, if you want to ensure that you are not buying a fake card, there are a few things to consider before you buy. First off is the hologram, especially on the big name brands of the card you are purchasing. The big name card dealers have a small hologram on the back of the card, so if this is missing, you will know it is a fake. You also want to check the name brand of the card. Most of the bigger names, like Topps, generally have a specific way of spelling the card name. So, you want to check this as well, to ensure you are getting a real card. These are the easiest things to spot, but there are also other small subtle hints to look for, especially when at a trade show, in order to ensure the card that you are buying is really a genuine card.

If you’re thinking about trading in some of your sports memorabilia for some cold, hard cash, here are our suggestions on what’s typically the most valuable.
Jerseys from a winning year: If you’ve been sitting on a Braves 1991 World Series jersey all this time you may be waiting on a cash cow to come in. Trade in your winning jersey from any sport for a 1:10 return as opposed to a regular year’s frock.
Autographed by a team: Sure it’s great to have an autographed item from a good player but if you can get an entire team you may be on the right track. Depending on the success of the team you may have more than you think on your hands.
Momentous Balls: Of course, if you’ve got a homer ball by Barry Bonds you may have a hot-ticket item but what about one from a no-hitter or something totally off the wall? Have them appraised by multiple sources.

Others choose to put pen to paper in more literal fashion. Jose Canseco has made headlines for both in the twenty five plus years since his big league debut, one of the most controversial and polarizing figures in the history of Major League Baseball. Take home a piece of history with this game worn Jose Canseco pinstriped jersey from his brief 2000 stint with the World Series Champion New York Yankees. Making just one appearance in the famed Subway Series, this is the very shirt off Canseco’s back, adorned with the slugger’s autograph and hand signed inscriptions “33″ and “2000 WSC.” This was the second of Canseco’s World Series rings, winning with the Athletics in the 1989 season. Elsewhere in collection of hardware, Canseco has also had to make room for 4 Silver Slugger Awards, an American League MVP, an AL Rookie of the Year crown and an AL Comeback Player of the Year award.Of course, Canseco’s career was far from smiles and congratulatory remarks. In his 2005 tell-all book, Juiced: Wild Times, Rampant ‘Roids, Smash Hits & How Baseball Got Big, Canseco burned bridges with many major league players, managers and officials, with his claim that an estimated 85 of all big leaguers took anabolic steroids, naming names of some of the more prolific sluggers of his era along the way. Though controversial and poorly received by the baseball community, many of the accusations made in Canseco’s book have actually held weight, as in the years following its publication, many of those implicated have admitted steroid use, including Mark McGwire and Jason Giambi, while Rafael Palmiero would go on to test positive for steroids later that year. Canseco attempted a sequel, though only a certain amount of material ever saw the light of day. Among those claims were allegations that Alex Rodriguez had used performance enhancing drugs and had been introduced to a steroid dealer by Canseco. Though ARod confessed to using PEDs from 2001 to 2003, he vehemently denies Conseco’s further claims, citing their accuracy as “100 false.”Since his baseball career has come to a close, finishing with 462 HRs, good for 32nd all-time, Canseco has tried his hand elsewhere in the arena of athletics, the octagon to be exact, training and competing in Mixed Martial Arts.

Now you can be the proud owner of the protective headgear that helped to safeguard Indianapolis’ most valuable natural resource from defensive ends and linebackers with heads full of steam. The helmet for auction was used during the 2003 season, his 6th in the NFL, and was autographed in January of 2004. The item has been approved by the Upper Deck Authenticated Memorabilia Registration under their thorough and reliable 5-step authentication process, including a witness present at the signing.Since joining the Indianapolis Colts as a rookie out of the University of Tennessee, Manning has been the undisputed face of the franchise and the premiere quarterback in the NFL. Unparalleled as a field general over the course of his career, Manning has been named the NFL’s Most Valuable Player 4 times (an NFL record), led the Colt’s to 2 Super Bowl appearances, while hoisting the Lombardi Trophy in 2006 and taking home Super Bowl MVP honors in the process. A rare breed of NFL superstar, Manning has been committed to the same franchise throughout his career, as he enters his 13th year of NFL service. The starting quarterback in Indianapolis since his rookie season in 1998, Manning has been arguably the most successful 1 overall draft pick of his decade. At Tennessee, Manning ended his illustrious career as the Volunteers’ all-time passing leader, racking up 11,201 yards and 89 TD passes. Manning set the bar for Southeastern Conference quarterbacks with winning 39 games as a starter, a conference record at the time. The son of former Saints QB Archie Griffin and the older brother of Giants QB Eli Manning, Peyton has been the premiere member of what some call the royal family of quarterbacks. Not only has he brought Colts fans over a decade of joy on the field, he has also established himself as one of the league’s most marketable players, avoiding the disdain of fans that so often comes with success, that is of course, “if you like 6’5”, 230 lbs. quarterbacks with a laser rocket arm.”

This game used ball comes from his September, 13, 2009 start against the Tampa Bay Rays during which Lester delivered an inspired pitching performance in its own right. Cruising to 8 shutout innings, Lester extended his scoreless innings streak to 15, having gone 7 rounds in a zero run effort against the Cubs in his previous start. Lester picked up the win on both occasions, running his record to 13-7 through that point in the season, and lowering his already solid Earned Run Average to an exemplary 3.27. Lester issued only 2 hits to Rays hitters while striking out 7 and giving 3 a free pass. The ball itself has been DNA-authenticated by the Professional Sports Authenticator service, guaranteeing it was indeed used in this exact game and validating Jon Lester’s signature. A corresponding PSA/DNA sticker and certificate will be issued to the high-bidder along with the game ball, in order to verify this claim.Lester’s personal story is truly an awe-inspiring tale. In 2006, Lester was diagnosed with lymphoma, a type of cancer that begins in the lymphatic cells of the immune system. Fortunately, Lester’s case was treatable, however, the pitcher was forced to undergo chemotherapy treatments during the off season. By December of the same year, Lester’s doctors believed the disease to be in remission, showing no signs or symptoms in the latest CT scans. Lester worked towards getting back to the Majors, attending Red Sox spring training, then beginning the season with their Class A Greenville affiliate. Lester spent time with the AAA Pawtucket Red Sox in April before finally getting the call back up to the show. He made his first start of the 2007 season against the Indians, in which he picked up the win. Lester would go on to pitch the deciding final game of the 2007 World Series, earning the victory, and throw his first career no hitter against the Kansas City Royals in May 2008.

This particular batting practice and spring training jersey was used by Jeter during the 1999 season, a year that ended with the Yankees defeating the Atlanta Braves to become World Series Champions. The jersey itself prominently features a 5 Joe DiMaggio memorial patch, as New York chose to honor the late Yankee Clipper, who passed away in early March of ’99. The item has been certified as authentic by Yankee-Steiner Collectibles, the official collectibles company of the New York Yankees. The 1999 season marked Jeter’s 4th full season in the Major Leagues, and is considered by many to be the superstar’s true break out season, though he was still among the Yankees’ best in their 1998 World Series Championship season. In 1999, Jeter led American League in hits with 219, while finishing second in batting average at .349 and second in runs scored as well with 134 (actually up 7 from his AL-leading total of 127 in ’98). Jeter also became the second shortstop in the Yankees’ storied franchise history to top the century mark in RBI, knocking in 102 runs after spending a healthy chunk of the season in the 3-hole. By the close of the regular season, Jeter had set career highs in average, runs, hits, rbi, doubles, triples, home runs, slugging percentage and on-base percentage.Jeter’s already exemplary 1999 showing only improved in the post season. In the ALDS, facing the Rangers, Jeter upped his batting average to .455. He continued to hit well throughout the playoffs as Jeter batted .350 against the rival Red Sox in the ALCS before hitting .353 off the Braves highly touted pitching staff, on the way to his second consecutive World Series win.

Originally constructed with boxing in mind, it afforded a relatively small and intimate sports viewing experience, which combined with its age made the Garden notoriously quirky, often posing problems from visiting teams and those unfamiliar with the grounds. Built before the National Hockey League regulated the size of NHL rinks, its skating surface was 9 feet shorter and 2 feet narrower than the other home ices around the country. Visitors locker room quarters were small and cramped, the entire arena was without air conditioning, and electrical problems were more than a sporadic occurrence, not too mention the furry rodent fans that might as well have had season tickets. Still, for all its flaws, the Garden will forever live on in the hearts and minds of the Boston faithful, and for the lucky high bidder, a part of it can live on in your living room.

With no need to strike fear into opposing linebackers and safety, this game used jersey can now adorn your living room, serving as the ideal centerpiece for a die hard Cowboys fan or a must-have addition to any collection of NFL memorabilia. This particular home jersey is from the 1990-1992 seasons, a time in which the Cowboys were just entering their pinnacle period of success, and Emmitt Smith quickly transitioned from a heralded rookie to NFL superstar.Joining the Cowboys in 1990, after spending 3 seasons at the University of Florida, Smith enjoyed his first double digit touchdown season as a rookie, rushing for nearly 1,000 yards in the process, falling just short at 937, but earning NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year honors. In 1991 and 1992, Smith would go on to lead the NFL in rushing amassing 1,563 and 1,713 yards respectively, and finding the pay-dirt 30 times in two seasons. Smith was selected for the Pro Bowl in each of his first three seasons, a streak that would continue until an injury plagued 1996 season.By the time he retired, Smith had broken Walter Payton’s all time NFL rushing record, tallying 18,355 yards on the ground in total. Smith also won three Super Bowls with the Cowboys, the first of which in a 1993 season that saw Smith take home not only the Lombardi trophy, but the NFL MVP award, the NFL season rushing crown and Super Bowl MVP honors, the first time in NFL history a single running back accomplished all 4 feats in the same season. Smith was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame earlier this month in his first year of eligibility.
